After our first piece on Zach Cunningham, New England’s Patriots Malik Cunningham was making the news in their preseason match against Zach’s old team the Houston Texans.
Though they lost 20 9, Malik Cunningham had a great game with a neat run that led to a Stand up (sorry a touch down). As we said we are still getting up to speed with American football.
Despite being only drafted in the third round of the 2023 USFL Draft (the team that chose him was actually Birmingham Stallions, but he decided against playing form them and made the decision to enter the 2023 NFL Draft. The USFL is a minor league comprising of eight team and if you have never heard of this league that is because it began in 2022. However, despite if being called a minor league it does receive substantial funding and the matches are covered by Fox Sports. The NFL is the main American Football League and is made up of 32 teams, which are split into two groups (the National Football Conference and the American Football Conference).
Malik was not picked in the 2023 NFL Draft, but the New England Patriots then chose to sign Cunningham as an undrafted free agent, but to see what the other teams may have missed, you only have to look at the highlights from the Texans game.
Malik Cunningham originally went by his middle name, Malik, then he decided to use his first name to his Micale, in the 2019 season, but then he went back to using Malik as his primary name in 2020. This is why his name appears to disappear form US Football records for part of 2019.
Â
Prior to playing for the Patriots he He played college football for Louisville. His first two season was nothing to write home about. In 2017 Malik only appeared in 10 games and made just three starts in 2018. In the al important table of yards completed and passes made he only made 40 yards himself and in his 67 passes he made 473 yards and had one touchdown.Â
Â
His breakthrough came in 2019 when Malik was named MVP for the 2019 Music City Bowl, when he completed 279 yards and had two touchdowns and ran 81 yards. Malik also competed in the 2021 First Responder Bowl and the 2023 Senior Bowl.
